Screen Edge Snapping does not use existing Layouts

Describe the bug
When using "Enable Window suggestions for screen edge snapping" and moving a tile to the edge the suggested layout is not one of the existing layouts

To Reproduce
Steps to reproduce the behavior:

1. In my case I only have layouts that are vertically separated. All horizontal Layouts are removed (see screenshot)
2. Go to Settings and Enable "Enable Window suggestions for screen edge snapping"
3. Have at least 2 windows open
4. Drag First window to left side for it to snap
5. Now there will be "Window suggestions" on where to Tile the other Window
6. The used layout for this has a horizontal split even though I don't have any layouts like that (see second screenshto

Same problem here, when I use edge snapping, the suggestions only allow using quarter tiles, which isn't useful at all on a small display.

Imo, if I snap a tile to fill half of my screen, the suggestion should fill the other half! And when I snap a window into a quarter, then it could suggest more quarter tile for me.

But maybe the best would be if there was an option to override the suggested tile size? Like dragging the suggested window between two quarters could fill both quarters.

I think it is currently not possible/implemented that edge snapping follows the configured tile layout.
Edge snapping has it own tiles preconfigured (quarter tiles).

This feature would be awesome though :)
I just replaced two monitors with an ultrawide and my default layout would be two tiles, splitted horizontally with one 1/3 width and the other one 2/3.
Having the option to select the prefered layout for edge snapping would be a great addition, for the moment i had to disable this.

Hi, thanks for opening this issue and the discussion! Yes, when using Screen Edge Snapping the layout is fixed to a quarter division. It is fully forced and it does not follow any of the layouts you have. There is a pull request improving this #323

The idea is to add three modes:

• Default: When moving to a corner, it moves the window to a quarter. When moving to an edge, it moves the window to half display. This is the current behaviour
• Adaptive: When moving to a corner, it moves the window to a quarter and also fills the empty space between the border and the nearest tiled window. When moving to an edge, it does the same but it moves the window to half display
• Granular: snap to layout tile that's nearest to the cursor, so instead of a full column you can have a small window (triple column stack etc)

Same thing for the Windows Suggestion: the suggestions follow a fixed layout, which is the quarter division one. This will be improved in the future but there is not work done yet. We have an issue for it #286. I'm open to pull requests as well and I can provide any support needed

Hmm so that is the default already? I came here because no matter where I move my windows, I can only get it to snap to quarters, never half the screen.

Hi @Aasikki , yes it is the default already. You should enable the half when moving the window to the middle of the screen border. You can customize this with the "quarter tiling activation area" setting

this was partially fixed in 17.3 such that dragging to the left/ride sides no longer performs the default quarter split and follows the selected layout if adaptive or granular is selected. however, dragging to the top (no matter which edge) still performs a maximise instead of respecting the selected layout. that has been my biggest gripe in accidentally maximising windows.

Thank you for your feedback! What is your suggestion here? Some people might want to maximize, some other might want to respect the selected layout.
