Using NETEDIT functions via command line

I have a question on NETEDIT: I can see most NETCONVERT options are used in NETEDIT to modify network elements. Is there a way to use certain NETEDIT functions without GUI and only via command line? For example, changing a junction type, adding a lane, split edge, add edge in opposite direction etc.

You can define patch files in PlainXML and load them along with the net file into netconvert e.g. for adding a lane or splitting an edge.

but in that case I need to define the new lane in a plainXML and patch the network, whereas in NETEDIT it's just two clicks.

Actually, netedit allows loading scripts that call editing functions. We use this for testing. It was never intended for end users and is therefore not documented but you could look at the python code in tools/neteditTestFunctions.

My recommendation would be to use sumolib to write the patch files and run netconvert as described in https://sumo.dlr.de/docs/Tutorials/ScenarioGuide.html#modifying_node_positions_with_the_help_of_sumolib
