not enough memory to load specified image

Trying to install flatcar on my server, and I get the error "not enough memory to load specified image" every time I attempt to install. Not sure why, as the server has 64gb of memory, which should be sufficient. Anyone know what might cause this?

Hello, are you trying to use PXE boot? As there might be some issues with the pxe binaries that allocate a small amount memory like 64 MB.

The cpio.gz is almost 400 MB in size, and thus it might pose a problem to the bootloaders. One thing you can try is of course, update the server firmware to the latest if not already so.

I will attempt the nightly. For reference it's a first generation threadripper system, here's the specs; Asrock Taichi x399, AMD 1950x Threadripper, 32gb (not 64 as I thought) corsair ram, not exactly sure what, but if it matters I can figure it out, it is 8x4gb if that matters. And a RTX 4000 GPU.

Let me know if there's anything else you need in terms of hardware info

Also, if you do want to try Flatcar, you can use any other Linux to install Flatcar (as a temporary workaround). You can boot an Ubuntu live image disk, then download flatcar-install script (https://www.flatcar.org/docs/latest/installing/bare-metal/installing-to-disk/#required-dependencies).

Hmm, this might be a problem with the actual isolinux/syslinux and how it sees memory on this hardware. At a first glance - Disable any "memory hole" in the BIOS and maybe this article might help: https://www.elivecd.org/faq/error-booting-usb-not-enough-memory-load-specified-image/.

Appreciate the help, I tried the nightly and the same issue. I did manage to install using the script in a live image however. I will attempt to change the bios settings later today and see if that fixes it though. Thanks

Finally got the time to troubleshoot, and I cannot find any setting for "memory hole", I've also tried disabling as many of the other memory settings, including xmp without being able to install from ISO.

Like I said however, I was able to install using the method above, so it's not the end of the world, would just be nice to figure out the root issue.

Hi there, having the same issue on a zimablade.
Already fixed it by running the install script on a live ubuntu as already suggested, just wanted to add another hardware piece to the issue.
